Ah yes. That time of year. Just ran these a couple weeks ago in a powder puff derby.

I helped my nephew with one recently. I drilled deep holes in the back of it and inserted weights.

Usually you can drill long holes into the back.

We carved out hollows underneath and screwed them in.

They didn’t allow three wheeling, but we did bend/polish the axles and aligned it to be a rail runner.

They came over and I helped with the weights, axles, and sanding the shape they came with. Nephew helped about about 25% of the effort.

Then they went home, took the wheels off to paint it, and they put back together. I wanted to help with the final setup, but my brother in law didn’t think it was necessary. He was wrong, but it wasn’t my car. Nephew ran middle of the pack times.

Shame, since he weight and balance was dead-on.

These are the weights he brought

I wish they would have been heavier, it was hard to find room for the number of those weights we needed.

Making it weigh five ounces is going to be tough without some small form weights like that.

I remember when I was a kid, my dad routed out sections of the bottom of the car and filled with with fender washers/glue.

Craft/hobby stores have pinewood derby shit too, I think.

Add weight as high up as possible. It’s all about getting as much potential Energy as possible to convert to kinetic energy

Better off putting those weights higher

Yeah, but it’s powder puff. They’d rather have something they’re proud of visually. Thats the real competition. One daughter went the extra mile and stained/clear coated to stand out.

The kids winning the heats never touch their cars. It’s become dad vs. dad.

Making the kids happy #1 no doubt
